Bradford v Port Vale
Having been bought by German investors in May, Bradford will be keen to build on last season's performances that ended with defeat in the playoffs. They won seven successive home league games at the end of the regular season and no side in League One won more home games in 2015/2016. In stark contrast, no side survived in League One with more defeats than Port Vale on the road last season. Like Bradford, Port Vale begin the new season with a new manager but they also have a new-look squad and it may take time for the players to gel. On that basis, the home win on Saturday appears to be a sound investment.
Walsall v AFC Wimbledon
Walsall finished last season just three points off the top of the League One table, narrowly missing out on the automatic promotion spots before going out in the playoffs to Barnsley. Wimbledon, meanwhile, achieved promotion from League Two having finished the regular season in 7th place, 10 points adrift of the automatic promotion spots. Both sides will begin the new season with several adjustments in terms of personnel but the home win is available at appealing odds of 23/20 and, with Wimbledon finding their feet in the division, few would predict any other outcome.
Portsmouth v Carlisle
Portsmouth are the bookies’ clear favourites to land the League Two title this season having missed out on promotion last term in the playoffs. They have replaced their outgoing players with genuine quality at this level and, although even money seems rather short to end the season with a place in League One, they are well worth backing at similar odds to record a home win over Carlisle on the opening day of the new season. Carlisle made a promising start to the 2015/2016 season but won just seven of their 27 matches in all competitions after the turn of the year (D11, L9). They finished the season in 10th place, 11 points behind Saturday's opponents.
